Back from Adventure by arisuonpaa Back from Adventure by arisuonpaa
For almost a week I spent time studying color theory whenever the kids were sleeping. Here is my latest painting where I tried to apply what I had learnt. Most importantly the warm and cool tones are put next to each other in almost every area of the painting. Notice how the warm areas of the horse are surrounded by cool tones, and the cool shadows of the horse have warm shadows of the trees next to it. Also the lower part of the horse is having warmth because of the reflected sunlight from the ground. Again it gives nice contrast with the cool area lit by the sky.

This time I also tried to keep my values simple and have large areas of light and shadow. Instead of using only values to render forms, I also tried to suggest it by having a shift in temperature. This way the values could be kept more simple, which in turn allows large shapes to have a stronger impact for the composition.

Again I’m going after a feel of a traditional painting, and it's entirely painted in ArtRage 5. I was using palette knife to soften some areas more than what I did in my previous painting to get some edge variation.

Hope you like it. Any comments would be appreciated.

Sometimes I post progress shots and extra insight to my painting process on my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/artofarisuonp…

Great job! How did you get that matte texture on the canvas? It was created digitally, so I thought I'd ask. :)

ArtRage is quite good at creating the texture. You just need to choose the correct tools and canvas texture to get nice results.

Ah, ok. Thanks. I overlooked that you produced this in artrage. I work in krita, so there's probably a feature like that in there somewhere. I'll have to look for it.

It looks great! I really like the traditional feel to the textures, and I think the composition is very strong, with just a few large bold shapes.
It's also always fascinating to read other artists' thought process behind their work - thanks for sharing. I can certainly see that you've applied what you learned about colour to the painting to contribute to its success! :)

Oooo lovely work with the colors! What you've done with this has resulted in a very bold illustration while still looking very natural.

I hope this horse had a nice adventure!

This is absolutely gorgeous and if not for your description, I'd have assumed you were already a master at colour theory. The golden tones make the whole piece look dream-like.

Found this on the thumbshare! I love the soft yellows from where the light is coming from and soft blues on the horses back! Good warm/cold color contrast!

See the description of my other painting here: arisuonpaa.deviantart.com/art/…

Probably one of the most important thing is to study traditional painting. I've tons of books that are for oil painting. One of the best books for painting is "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid.

Using ArtRage helped quite a lot, but you still need to know what colors to choose and where to blend etc.
